Suddenly I noticed one of the deer was wearing some kind of collar.
I don't know what it was or who put it there, but it seemed to make her boss of all the deer. She kept a close eye on the other deer and every now and again she'd strike them with her front hooves.
If someone stepped out of line, she'd give them the devil deer look......
which would strike fear in their hearts.
They were gobbling up my tiny seedlings and then they stomped all over Foxsun's grave.... I decided I had enough and it was time for them to pose for the camera before I told them to leave.
They give me the old innocent.."Surely you don't mean us" look.
And that means you too Boss Deer with your fancy high tech collar!

The wildlife dept will periodicaly put a radio collar on deer or elk. To track their movements. Incidentaly it isnt illegal to hunt them, but you have to return the collar to the Wildlife dept. At least thats how I understand them.
Thanks for telling me about that. My curiosity is raised now. They must catch them with a tranquillizer dart. I'm going to see if I can find out the results of their studies. I'd love to know how far these deer travel and when. :)
Beautiful! They're so healthy looking and fluffy in their soft winter coats.
We saw a cow moose with a collar on last spring. Strange to see, but it makes sense that they'd want to track them. There was a guy somewhere around here whose job was to go out and find out what had happened when one of the collars stopped moving. (On horseback. I totally want his job). They were tracking cause of death - predation, etc.
Great pictures! I love deer, they're so beautiful and fun to watch. We don't have many around our place because we're surrounded by hunters or gun happy people.
That's interesting with the collar. I've never seen that or heard of it before either!
I went to a class once where we got to use a search antena for the collars. The Wildlife officer( a woman) she went out in the woods and hid the collar, then the class had to use the antena, and it is 3 or so feet across! to find the collar, following the beeps on the unit, when it beeps fast you are closer and slow you are farther away. It was fun and pretty cool!
